Story 1: The Golden Mangoes

📖 English Translation:

Tenali's dying mother wished for golden mangoes to be donated to Brahmins after her death. Having little money, Tenali invited ten Brahmins and offered real mangoes coated in turmeric — calling them "golden mangoes." When the Brahmins protested, Tenali cleverly pointed out: if the soul of the departed truly receives these offerings, then both real gold and turmeric-coated mangoes serve the same purpose. If the Brahmins insisted on real gold, they were only thinking of themselves — not the departed soul. The Brahmins were left speechless by his sharp logic, and the King praised Tenali's wisdom.

Moral of the Story:

English: Greed disguised as tradition must be questioned with intelligence and courage.

🏫 School Project Note: This story teaches students to question blind rituals and think logically — useful for essays on "Critical Thinking" or "Social Evils."

Story 2: The Room of Mirrors

📖 English Translation:

An arrogant merchant came to Vijayanagara boasting his goods were the finest. King Krishnadevaraya asked Tenali to teach him humility. Tenali decorated a room entirely with mirrors and put the merchant inside with his goods for a "one-day exhibition." The merchant was excited to see the reflections, thinking many customers had arrived. But every move he made, every price he quoted — the reflections mirrored him perfectly. He sold nothing. Tenali then explained: "The world mirrors back your arrogance. True recognition comes from the quality of your work, not your boasting." The merchant bowed his head in shame.

Moral of the Story:

English: Arrogance leaves you talking to yourself. Let your work speak, not your pride.

🏫 School Project Note: Perfect for essays on "Importance of Humility" or "Effects of Arrogance." Great discussion topic for Class 5–8.

Story 3: The Cow and the Calf

📖 English Translation:

A dispute arose between a farmer and his neighbour over ownership of a newborn calf. Neither the King nor his ministers could settle it fairly. Tenali devised a simple test: he placed the cow and calf at a distance in an open field, then released the calf. The calf immediately ran to the farmer's cow and began feeding. Tenali declared: "Truth has revealed itself. The bond between a mother and child cannot be faked. Nature has given us the verdict." The King awarded the calf to the farmer, and the neighbour left in shame.

Moral of the Story:

English: Truth always reveals itself naturally. A simple test is enough to find justice.

🏫 School Project Note: Ideal for projects on "Justice and Truth" or "Animal Instincts." Suitable for Class 3–6.

Story 4: The Lazy Scholar

📖 English Translation:

A scholar in Vijayanagara received a royal salary but refused to do any work, claiming labour was beneath his status. Tenali tricked him with a story of buried treasure behind the palace. The scholar eagerly dug for a week — and found nothing. But Tenali pointed out what he had actually found: a healthier body from the exercise, fertile soil that now bloomed with flowers, and proof that hard work itself is the real treasure. The scholar realised that knowledge without effort is worthless, and began contributing meaningfully to the kingdom.

Moral of the Story:

English: Hard work is the real treasure. Knowledge without effort is useless.

🏫 School Project Note: Perfect for essays on "Value of Hard Work" or "Laziness." Very relatable for students. Suitable for Class 4–7.

Story 5: Curing the King's Sadness

📖 English Translation:

King Krishnadevaraya fell into unexplained sadness despite his kingdom's prosperity. Doctors and scholars failed to help. Tenali gave the King an unusual prescription: spend one day each with ten of the kingdom's most suffering citizens — the blind, the widowed, the sick. After ten days, the King told Tenali his sadness had quietly disappeared. Tenali explained: "When we think only of our own sorrows, sadness grows. When we try to ease others' pain, joy returns. This is the most effective medicine — and no doctor can prescribe it." The King was deeply moved and became a more compassionate ruler.

Moral of the Story:

English: Helping others is the truest path to our own happiness.

🏫 School Project Note: Excellent for essays on "Empathy," "Kindness," or "Good Leadership." Suitable for Class 5–9. Also useful for value education lessons.

Story 1: The King's Wisdom Test

The scholar asked three impossible questions about the center of the world, stars in the sky, and hairs on his head. Tenali gave clever answers that couldn't be proven wrong, using his wit to defeat the proud scholar and win the gold coins!

Story 2: Who is the Biggest Fool?

The King realized his mistake and learned a valuable lesson about trust and money.

In English: Don't trust strangers blindly with money. Think before you spend.

Story 3: The Cat and the Rats

📖 English Summary:

Village had too many rats. King gave cats to every house and ordered villagers to feed them milk daily. The cats stopped hunting rats because they got free food! Tenali gave hot milk to one cat. It burned its tongue and never drank milk again. Without free food, it started hunting rats. The King understood: when everything is given free, nobody works hard!

(Moral):

In English: Necessity is the mother of effort. When things come easy, people stop working hard.

Story 4: The Clever Thieves

📖 English Translation:

Daytime thefts were rising in the kingdom's marketplace. Guards couldn't catch the thieves. King threatened ministers with punishment if they failed in one week. Tenali stepped forward and promised to catch them in a single day.

He disguised himself as an old merchant with a box labelled "Valuable Jewels for Sale." Three young thieves approached him. While Tenali bent to open the box, one grabbed a cloth bundle and ran. But Tenali had secretly filled it with chili powder! The thief opened it, got chili powder on his face, went blind with burning eyes, and was caught immediately. The other two were captured by guards Tenali had strategically placed around the market.

Tenali told the King: "To catch a thief, find their weakness. Greed was their weakness — I used it against them!"

(Moral):

In English: Greed always leads to downfall. A clever solution can defeat even the strongest enemy.

Story 5: Three Questions – Vikatakavi and the Arrogant Brahmin

📖 English Translation:

A proud scholar named Shastracharya arrived in Vijayanagara, challenging anyone to debate him. No courtier could match him. Tenali agreed to a three-questions-each contest.

The scholar asked: How high is the sky? How deep is the earth? What am I thinking right now? Tenali answered each with brilliant wit — go measure it yourself; use your stick to find out; you're thinking I can't beat you — and then proceeded to prove that thought wrong!

Tenali then asked the scholar: How heavy are all your books? Has your knowledge brought you happiness? And finally — "If knowledge brings arrogance, is it knowledge or ignorance?" The scholar had no answer to the last question, bowed his head, and accepted defeat gracefully.

(Moral):

In English: Arrogance leads to downfall. True knowledge brings humility, not pride.
